Camping Power, Light & Sound

Power, light and sound for the whole weekend – no flat batteries on day two.

How much power does your crew need?

Rough estimate: one to two smartphone charges per person per day, plus lights and a speaker. For small groups one power bank per person is often enough; for bigger crews a shared power station pays off.

Solar as a supplement

A folding solar panel can recharge a power station during the day. Actual output depends heavily on the weather – so plan it as a supplement, not your only source.

Be considerate with sound

Follow campsite rules and quiet hours. Waterproof speakers have a clear advantage in changeable weather.

Wh and watts: capacity is not power

Watts describe instantaneous power, watt-hours the energy needed over time. A 10 W device running for 5 hours needs 50 Wh in theory; losses come on top. So check both output power and capacity. mAh figures are not meaningfully comparable without voltage. Make a list of devices, usage and charging ports beforehand instead of buying the biggest number.

Battery safety and weather resistance

Keep power stations and chargers dry, don't let them heat up in direct sun and use them only within permitted temperature ranges. A waterproof speaker doesn't make its open charging ports rainproof. Stop using damaged, swollen or unusually hot batteries. Check the organiser's quiet hours, power rules and permitted devices in advance.

Portable power station

Shared power reserve for compatible devices; calculate your needs in advance.

What to look for

Add up your needs in Wh: power in watts × hours of use. Allow for conversion losses and a reserve. Capacity (Wh) is not output power (W); both must fit. Check USB-C power, permitted temperatures and compatible solar inputs. Operate dry and well ventilated.

Waterproof Bluetooth speaker

Music at camp; check the weather protection of the specific model.

What to look for

Check the specific IP rating rather than just the word waterproof. Closed port covers and the manufacturer's conditions are part of it. Runtime depends on volume and use. Consider weight, charging port and campsite quiet hours.

Battery string lights

Makes your camp easy to find at night.

What to look for

Look for an outdoor-suitable rating including the battery compartment. Compare runtime, light modes and mounting. Route cables away from walkways; decorative lights do not replace safe path lighting.

Folding solar panel – AI-generated example of this type of gear, not a specific Amazon product

Folding solar panel

Charges a power station or power banks during the day.

What to look for

Voltage range, connector and charging power must match the power station's input. Rated output is rarely reached at camp. Allow for shade, angle and weather; the panel is no reliable substitute for charge you bring.

High-capacity power bank

Extra mobile energy; compare usable capacity and charging power.

What to look for

Compare energy in Wh and usable charging power. mAh figures usually refer to internal cell voltage and cannot be converted directly into phone charges. Check USB-C PD, ports, weight and charging time.

Rechargeable head torch

Hands free on the walk back to the tent at night.

What to look for

Look for a comfortable fit, a low setting for close-up tasks and a suitable rating. Manufacturer runtimes often apply to specific brightness levels. A backup light helps when the battery runs out.

LED camping lantern

Bright light for gazebo and tent.

What to look for

Check adjustable brightness, hanging options and stability. Light should illuminate the table, not dazzle the neighbours. Match runtime and charging port with your power supply.

USB multi cable

Several connector types in one cable; check device compatibility.

What to look for

Check connectors, data function and permitted power per output. Multi cables don't automatically fast-charge every device at once. For high USB-C power, prefer a suitable single cable.

Waterproof phone pouch

Extra moisture protection when sealed correctly and rated appropriately.

What to look for

Check inner dimensions, closure and the stated rating. Test it without your phone according to the instructions before first use. Touch and camera may be limited; the pouch is no guarantee against every water damage.
